A response is needed
Tottenham's league campaign has begun with two points from five matches. Four games brought no goal, and the 3-2 defeat by Aston Villa before the international break left Spurs at the foot of the table. For Roberto De Zerbi, this trip is less about promises and more about producing a visible reaction.
There were at least attacking signs against Villa: Spurs scored their first two league goals of the season. The challenge now is to turn those moments into a complete performance, with greater control when the game becomes stretched.
Defensive foundations
Tottenham strengthened their defensive options in the summer, giving De Zerbi alternatives around Micky van de Ven. That depth matters at Old Trafford. Spurs cannot allow a difficult opening to become an invitation for United to build momentum.
Compact distances, calm possession and protection of the central spaces will be essential. The first task is to stay in the contest; the next is to recognise when United leave room to attack.
The midfield battle
United have also made an uneven start, taking five points from five league games and arriving without a win in their previous three. Their underlying attacking numbers still demand respect, and Bruno Fernandes remains the player Spurs must prevent from receiving freely between the lines.
Tottenham need enough pressure on the ball to stop Fernandes dictating the match, but not so much reckless movement that spaces open behind midfield. Winning second balls and using the first forward pass well could decide whether Spurs spend the night defending or make United turn towards their own goal.
Where Spurs can hurt United
The opportunity is in transition and in the wide areas. If Spurs can escape United's first press, there should be chances to carry the ball at a back line that has not enjoyed a settled start to the season. Mohammed Kudus has been Tottenham's clearest attacking threat; he will need support around him rather than being asked to create alone.
Patience should not become passivity. Spurs have to be brave enough to commit runners when the opening appears, while keeping the balance that has too often disappeared in decisive moments.
Recent history offers hope
United won 2-0 in the most recent meeting, but Spurs had gone eight matches unbeaten against them in all competitions before that. That run included the Europa League final victory and several strong league performances.
Old Trafford carries history and pressure, yet this is not a fixture Tottenham should approach with fear. Both teams arrive needing reassurance. The side that handles that tension better will give itself the clearest path to three points.
Legion's View
The table makes uncomfortable reading and the Opta forecast favours United, but this is also a chance for Spurs to reset the mood of the season. A disciplined defensive display must come first; from there, Tottenham have the pace and individual quality to make the game awkward for the hosts.
We want to see a team that competes for every phase, attacks with conviction and refuses to let the first five matches define what comes next. Old Trafford is a demanding place to seek a first league win. It would also be the perfect place to turn the tide.
