Something to Build On After Old Trafford

That late equaliser from Dominic Solanke against Manchester United felt like a small victory in itself. Down to ten men, away from home and still refusing to accept defeat, Spurs fought back for a 1–1 draw.

The result did not solve our problems, but at least we saw some fight. Roberto De Zerbi felt Spurs deserved more after the chances created in the first half and said it was the first time this season his players had truly shown themselves to be a team.

That is encouraging. But we have heard enough about encouraging performances. Now we need three points.

De Zerbi’s Press Conference: Injuries, Kulusevski and Marbella

De Zerbi’s latest press conference brought a mixture of disappointing injury news and one particularly welcome development. Savio and Lucas Bergvall are ruled out. Savio suffered a muscular problem before the squad departed for Marbella and is expected to miss several weeks. Bergvall picked up a knee problem early in the Manchester United match and, although he finished the game, De Zerbi expects him to be unavailable for around two weeks.

Pedro Porro is not ready either, with the manager suggesting he could return for the Chelsea fixture. Rodrigo Bentancur begins a three-match suspension after his red card at Old Trafford, while Xavi Simons, Wilson Odobert and Mykhailo Mudryk also remain out.

Then there is the news we have all been waiting for: Dejan Kulusevski is back in the matchday squad. After more than 500 days away, the medical staff have cleared Deki to return and De Zerbi confirmed he will start on the bench.

The manager described the news as especially meaningful because of everything the Sweden international has endured during his recovery. Whatever happens against Coventry, seeing him among the substitutes will be a welcome sight. We have missed his creativity, his ability to carry the ball and the unpredictability he brings to our attack.

De Zerbi also took the squad to Marbella after the United match. He had spoken about using the time together to turn a strong group of players into a team—one that suffers, attacks and defends together. After a difficult opening to the season, that togetherness is exactly what we need.

The manager remains confident that if Spurs keep creating chances and working collectively in attack and defence, the goals and victories will come. Let’s hope he is right, starting with Coventry.

Coventry Are Coming With Confidence

Anyone expecting an easy evening simply because Coventry have only recently returned to the Premier League should think again. Frank Lampard’s side have won their last two league matches: 1–0 away to Nottingham Forest and an impressive 4–1 home victory over Newcastle United.

Jack Rudoni, Sidiki Cherif, Ellis Simms and Stephen Mfuni were all on the scoresheet against Newcastle. That result should be enough warning that Coventry can punish teams who are not switched on.

They also have Taiwo Awoniyi back from suspension and Kaine Kesler-Hayden available again, although Luke Woolfenden, Aurele Amenda, Josh Eccles and Haji Wright remain out. They arrive with momentum; we arrive desperately needing a win. It is an awkward combination and this could be much tougher than some supporters expect.

What Spurs Need to Get Right

For us, it starts in midfield. We have seen too many situations where opponents find space between our midfield and defence. We cannot expect our centre-backs to handle everything while the players in front of them push forward without providing cover. We need to be more organised when possession changes hands.

Going forward, there is also the familiar problem of turning chances into goals. We created opportunities at Old Trafford, but we need to be more clinical. With Savio unavailable and Kulusevski only just returning, others must step up and take responsibility.

And please, let’s not give Coventry an early goal through a needless defensive mistake. The last thing we need is to spend another match chasing the game.

Legion’s View: This Is Our Opportunity

Six matches without a league victory is simply not good enough for Tottenham Hotspur. Yes, there have been injuries. Yes, De Zerbi is still trying to get his ideas across. And yes, the performance at Old Trafford gave us reasons to be encouraged. But eventually, performances must become results.

Coventry deserve respect, especially after their recent victories. Yet we are playing at home, in front of our own supporters, against a side we should be capable of beating.

We want to see the same determination we showed against United, but this time with better finishing, a more disciplined midfield and fewer mistakes at the back. Nobody is expecting perfection. We just want to see our team win.

This is a real opportunity for Spurs to claim our first Premier League victory of the season. Let’s take it. Our prediction: Spurs 2–1 Coventry City. Come On You Spurs! 🤍💙
